{May 19, 2007}   WHAT WE’RE ABOUT

HELLO LINE DANCERS!

For far too long a simple web log, which this is, has been needed to help keep people in touch with what’s going on and to help build the scene in Greater Manchester and surrounding areas.

This is what MANCHESTER IN LINE is all about.

Several times a week this weblog will be updated with news about classes, socials, dances, special events and more. If you want to list your class then e-mail us today via:

OUR FIRST REPORT! RADCLIFFE CIVIC HALL SOCIAL

FRIDAY 17TH MAY

A busy weekend on the Line dance scene, with dancers going off en masse to Morecambe and North Wales meant that a slightly smaller crowd than usual, around 50 avid dancers, descended upon Tex Promotions monthly social at the plush Civic Hall in Radcliffe, Northern Manchester.

DJ Peter Fairhead, the well-known radio DJ, long-time Line dance event organiser and host, was on hand to spin the discs and he did a great job of keeping a varied crowd happy and moving.

The playlist, from when Tim and I arrived, was as follows in this order:

Ribbon of Highway, Before The Devil, Smokey Places, Heartbreak Express, It’s Up To You, Committment (to Tell Me Ma), Be Strong, Feel the Magic, Miller Magic, Ashes of Love, All Day Long, Somebody Like You, Remember When, Rio, Lamtarra Rhumba (to Coco Jambo), Kill The Spiders, Cowboy Rhythm, East to West, Say Hey, Who Did You Call Darlin, Bosa Nova, Ham’s Jam (to music by Dixie Chicks), Everyone’s Someone, Don’t Feel Like Dancing, Leaving of Liverpool, Keep The Fire Burning (old Bev Knight RnB number), Bicycle Waltz, Grace Kelly, Head Over Heels, Solo Humano, Fields of Gold (to Radio by Woolpackers), Heart of an Angel, Shania’s Moment, Sunshine Shuffle, Pot of Gold, Razor Sharp, Walking Backwards, Part Time Lover, Hooked on Country, Vertical Expressions (to Cry of the Celts), Patient Heart and Rose Garden.

There were a few more but this was a requests social and Peter stuck to what people requested. He is a very versatile DJ much in demand for the usual round of parties, end of term balls, rugby club dos, corporate events and things similar so is well placed with a huge music collection to keep all factions within Line dancing happy (and clappy and stompy, as required!).

My favourites on the night in no particular order were Head Over Heels (certain Dance of Year winner in my view), Part Time Lover (good one by Dee Musk), Heart of an Angel (how many waltzes do we need…but this is a great routine to quality music), Pot of Gold, Patient Heart and some of the oldies but goodies.

At the Radcliffe event there is a core of “Golden Oldies” but, as you can see from the list above, there was great variety and truly something for everyone. Well done Renwick and Sheila (Tex) and Peter F.

DANCE SUGGESTIONS

A few good routines around at the moment and these are, in no particular order:

Part-Time Lover (Dee Musk) – A little tricky due to the fast steps but to great music by Stevie Wonder and with no tags and bridges this has been done nationwide and is popular in some Manchester LD clubs!

Heart of an Angel (William Brown) – Far too many waltzes around as ever but this one is actually really good, extremely popular with grass roots dancers and will last. Done at many local socials and classes.

Funky For Me – New 32-counter from Kim Ray, who some see as a rising star on the Line dance circuit. Great new routine for those of you who like something cool and street. Improver-Intermediate level, not tags and bridges and to another great track – Tell Me How You Feel – from Joy Enriquez.

Rumba Linda (Chris Walker) – Great for Improver classes and comes with suggested tracks by Enrique (really grows on you) and the Bellamy Brothers. Easy 64 counts and easy to teach.

One More Midnight (Maggie G) – Another “should be” hit for the one and only Maggie G to the title track of Hal Ketchum’s latest album. 64 counts, Improver level, easy to teach and a really catchy chorus. A must in your class!
